One of the three cornerstones of our mission at the Charles R. Wood Foundation, is funding local healthcare initiatives and projects. Charley felt very strongly about bolstering the availability and quality of healthcare in the North Country, as access to good medical services is vital to the success of any community and the well being of its residents.

The Glens Falls Hospital is the largest comprehensive care center between Albany and Montreal. It is absolutely necessary to the residents in this very large but generally rural region, and in 2001, Charley donated $1.4 million (the largest donation by a single donor the hospital has received to date) towards the purchase of a linear accelerator to administer radiation oncology treatments, allowing the hospital to become a comprehensive oncology treatment facility. Today, the Charles R. Wood Cancer Center is the premier cancer treatment facility in the region.

At the Charles R. Wood foundation, we continue to support Charley’s mission and dream of attaining better and more accessible healthcare in the North Country by giving priority to those grants that best achieve these goals.

Charles R. Wood Foundation made a $500,000 commitment to Albany Medical Center to support Albany Med’s new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to treat the region’s youngest, sickest, and most fragile patients spanning a 25-county area. The new NICU, one of only 18 New York State designated Level IV regional centers for critically ill newborns, will provide the space and resources these babies and their families need. All single occupancy rooms will be provide privacy for families and offer superior control of factors critical to the development of premature infants including heat, light, sounds, and infection.

In addition, our Foundation is proud to have provided funding for other centers for healthcare excellence including a $250,000 grant to Elizabethtown Hospital for a GE X-ray unit; a $410,000 grant for a digital mammography unit at Hudson Headwaters, and a $185,000 award for Ticonderoga Hospital’s upgrade to their digital mammography unit.
