2010 Grants Awarded by the Foundation

February 8, 2011 – Glens Falls, New York: The Charles R. Wood Foundation is currently accepting grant applications from IRS approved 501(c)3 organizations whose projects or programs assist children, healthcare or the arts in the Lake George Region and surrounding areas. Eligible applicants are invited to visit the website www.charlesrwoodfoundation.org and submit an online application by April 1, 2011 for consideration at the Spring meeting of Trustees. The next subsequent deadline will be September 1, 2011 for consideration at the Fall meeting.

In 2010 the Charles R. Wood Foundation awarded a total of $1,175,100 in grants to area nonprofit organizations. Over the past six years the Foundation has awarded nearly 7 million dollars, $6,825,728. Charles R. Wood established the foundation that bears his name in 1978 to provide assistance in areas of special need in the Lake George Region and surrounding areas. Grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations with an emphasis on programs for children, healthcare and the arts. Mr. Wood, founder of Storytown USA, the present-day Great Escape Theme Park, the Double H Hole in the Woods Camp for critically ill children and numerous other endeavors and businesses in the area, died in September of 2004 leaving the majority of his estate to the Charles R. Wood Foundation.

The following grants were awarded in 2010:

  • $250,000 to Crandall Library for their expansion project;
  • $125,000 to The Hyde Collection Trust for their roof infrastructure project;
  • $100,000 to the Saratoga Springs Performing Arts Center in support of the NYC Ballet program;
  • $50,400 to the Prospect Child & Family Center for the purchase of heating/cooling units;
  • $50,000 to Albany Medical Center Hospital for the purchase of intra-operative ultrasound equipment;
  • $50,000 to Glens Falls Hospital towards a HVAC upgrade;
  • $39,000 to various Food Pantries in the area during the holiday season;
  • $35,000 to Sunnyview Hospital and Rehabilitation Center Foundation for the purchase of Hi-Low beds for the Neuro Rehab Institute;
  • $30,000 to Peaceful Acres Horses for the building of yurt units for the therapeutic program;
  • $20,000 to the Adirondack Community College Foundation in continued support of the construction of a Regional Higher Education Center;
  • $15,950 to the Double H–Hole in the Woods Ranch for capital upgrades;
  • $15,000 to the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra for the music programs;
  • $10,000 to the Adirondack Historical Association to assist in meeting a challenge grant for auditorium improvements;
  • $10,000 to the Slate Valley Teen Center towards space renovation for a new center;
  • $10,000 to Catholic Charities of Diocese of Albany for the Children’s Mental Health Services Program;
  • $7,000 to the Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Long Lake Library for the replacement of outdated computers and software;
  • $5,000 to Let’s Involve Fort Edward for their Community Playground project;
  • $5,000 to Franklin Community Center for the “Project Lift” programs in Saratoga Springs schools;
  • $5,000 to The Salvation Army-Glens Falls Corps for the Food Pantry;
  • $5,000 to Fort Ann Youth League for Phase 2 of their field construction project;
  • $5,000 to the Town of Warrensburg for their community projects;
  • $5,000 to the Warren Washington County Homeless Youth Coalition Inc. for the Transitional Living Program;
  • $5,000 to Casting for Recovery for the August 2011 Retreat;
  • $5,000 to Junior Achievement of Northeastern New York for the economics education program;
  • $4,000 to Pendragon Inc. for the Wood Theater Productions;
  • $4,000 to Adirondack Treks for the purchase of group camping and outdoor climbing gear;
  • $3,750 to the Oscar Seagle Association for the Young Artist fund;
  • $3,000 to Creative Healing Connections for Wiawaka scholarships for the women’s Reintegration program;
  • $2,500 for the August 2010 “Beat the Odds” program sponsored by To Life! Inc.;
  • $2,500 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeast New York to help grant a child’s wish; and $2,000 to The Depot Theatre to bring a production to the Wood Theatre.
  • In addition, foundation-owned artwork valued at $285,000 was gifted to several museums and $11,000 was granted in smaller denominations to benefit various other not-for-profit organizations.
