Charles R Wood Offers $75,000 Matching Challenge Grant for Strand Theatre Foundation

Charles R Wood Offers $75,000 Matching Challenge Grant for Strand Theatre Foundation Challenges North Country Community to Match.

Plattsburgh, NY (May 15, 2013) – The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts (NCCCA) announced today that the Charles R. Wood Foundation has pledged $75,000 toward the last of the funds needed to complete The Strand Theatre Restoration. The pledge comes in the form of a matching challenge, which means that the community must come up with donations of $75,000 or greater before the amount is matched by the Foundation.

“The Strand Theatre is in the midst of raising the last $500,000 needed to complete the restoration and bring the theatre to operational status,” says Janine Scherline, NCCCA Executive Director. “The Charles R. Wood Challenge Grant is part of the $500,000 and will be used to fully equip the theatre with modern amenities including dressing rooms and state of the art lighting and sound capabilities.”

Scherline continues, “These amenities are needed to attract the finest touring groups and performing acts from around the globe, and will be utilized by our local artists right here in the North Country.

“The Charles R. Wood Foundation has been a generous supporter of the Strand Restoration project,” says Leigh Mundy, NCCCA Board President. “In 2011 the Foundation provided $150,000 as an initial contribution, which helped restore the auditorium.

Mundy continues by saying, “I’m so pleased that the Charles R Wood Foundation continues to support the NCCCA and the Strand, helping to make the North Country a better place to live, visit and do business.”

“The arts are so very vital to the city’s vibrancy and lifeblood to improving the quality of life. We are grateful to the Foundation for supporting us in our goal of providing a Performing Arts venue for our community.”

The historic Strand Theatre is located at 25 Brinkerhoff Street in downtown Plattsburg. The theatre was purchased in 2004 by the NCCCA. Since that time, the building has undergone restoration and renovation efforts through grants, donations from various community groups and individuals and hundreds of hours of volunteer labor. The theatre is being fully restored the opulence and grandeur of its former life as a Vaudeville Theatre, originally opened in 1924. When completed in late 2013, the theatre will house 958 seats, upgraded sound, lighting and heating/cooling systems as well as dressing rooms and a green room.

The Charles R. Wood Foundation was founded in 1978 with its mission to provide assistance to Non-for-profit organizations areas of special need with the emphasis on programs for children, healthcare and the arts in the Lake George Region and surrounding areas. Charles R. Wood himself was a great collector of fine art; it was his passion and perhaps his favorite past time, outside of work. His love of the arts is what brought about the third cornerstone of the Foundation’s mission stating that, “Children are our future, healthcare sustains the present, and the arts make the world a more enjoyable and culturally rich place for us all.”

Matching Donations can be made via mail to NCCCA/Matching gift for Strand 23 Brinkerhoff St, Plattsburg, NY 12901, by phone at (518) 563-1604 or via PayPal at www.plattsburgharts.org. Simply navigate to the Strand page and click on the “donate now” banner.
